Suzette has never been the same since her mother died. Her father is a harsh man who cares little for the feelings or desires of Suzette and her brother, and she longs for her mother's guidance as she navigates adulthood. She yearns for approval from her father that she will never get. And, even more, she wants to feel loved.

Emeline loves serving Lady Suzette, but she is unsatisfied. She does everything in her power to care for her younger brother and ailing father, but it never seems to be enough. She hates the poor treatment and disgusted looks from those who consider themselves her superiors, and she hates that she must bow and scrape to them simply to provide for her family.
