'If she thinks about it, Avery might be able to come up with stranger situations. She's been arrested before, and managed to break out of the gaol with half its food supplies. She's been in more riots than she can count, both organised and very, very disorganised. She's had a genuine conversation with a magpie, and saved a squirrel from drowning before impersonating a lawyer in order to speak to her incarcerated brother.
And yet Dove Nightshade asking for her number because a nanny smuggled a phone into the house of a strict political family feels like the oddest thing that's ever happened.'

Avery hates the Nightshade family for what she considers to be perfectly good reasons. Their political views, for one. Their monopoly over the government for another. And yet when one of the Nightshade kids runs into Avery at a shop and begs her to pretend to be dating, somehow Avery ends up getting a lot closer to the family than she's ever wanted.

Unless it was to punch one of them, of course.
