The Last Days At Forcados high School: A Glimpse Of The Future
As I drifted into my own land of dreams, I was slightly pulled back by a sound coming from the door. I didn't pay close attention and was unsure so I allowed myself let loose and get lost in the comforting state. A rough tug on my right breast brought me back to earth. I opened my eyes only to see step dad hovering over me. I screamed partly, because next thing I know he stuffs a handkerchief in my mouth and pins both my arms above my head. My voice was muffled by the thick piece of cloth in my mouth and.... After several years of being abroad fate brings Efua back to Nigeria. Her past confronts her in a traumatic way. Will overcome these challenges or let them tear her down? Jimmy has moved on with his life; having a company, dating a renowned and sexy lawyer Amaka. With all these he seemed to be at the top of his game not knowing what fate has in store for him. The things I knew that were once unethical, were bound to be saintly. The dreams I dreamt once upon a time, seemed to be an epitome of nightmares. The heart I thought I stole long ago, always belonged to someone else. The crimes I have committed all my life, became a handful of lessons that I ought to learn. The world I looked up to once, became a mortal enemy of mine. The family I thought would disown me, fought my battles for me. The life I never imagined I'd live, sadly it became a life I'd rather live than die. Lastly, the guilt I carried in me for the each and every second of my living, was a poison spreading and gradually banishing everything around me. Clearly, I was bounded by the past! Never have I imagined for the galaxy of guilt in me to steadily transform into a matter of great; Love. No, it wasn't for my dead sister, or for the woman I once claimed to love, or for my money-grubbing father, or even for the woman who was destined for me. In my story I struggle between loving my parents even though their actions make me angry, I struggle to be the shield for my sister while leaving her alone to pick herself up, I struggle to fit in with my peers even though we we've been friends for years. I can't even hold on to the person who saw me and wanted me. I hide myself behind thousands of questions, anxiety and fear. In my story I'm just another girl raised in Ibadan with nothing to look forward to. Hope is unknowingly what kept me together, hence I started writing letters. What am I hoping for? Who am I hoping on? Why? Why do I write to a person I can't see? How desperate must I be? I hope in a God I used to have around me. Though I don't blame him, I question why he left me, if he's still out there, and if he can still help me. Or maybe he never left me at all. Evolution
There are a lot of things you don't really think about until they happen to you. Take rape, for instance. I always thought, "That won't happen to me. I have a boyfriend. I trust him. He would never take advantage of me like that..." I couldn't have been more wrong. Love in this day and age is often confused for manipulation and abuse. The warning signs are here. The things we say will tell us everything that is wrong. You are worth more than what you think you are. It's not your fault. If they tell you otherwise, get out. Burn the bridge. Always remember someone is waiting for you to walk into their life. Someone needs you. Someone loves you. Getting away from all of the wrong people and finding the right ones could save you. I can promise you right now that it saved me. These are the journal entries and selected poems from my first experience of love that left a unpleasant taste in my mouth- quite literally. The teenage period is usually not always easy. You make mistakes, you learn from them. It's like a moulding phase towards adulthood, which tends to be harder than adults make it sound. Especially in this generation. Growing up in a society where having a psychological condition means you're a freak, abnormal or an attention seeker. Where gender inequality is still seen as normal and right. Where anything other than Heterosexuality means you're possessed or the spawn of the devil. Where showing your emotions as a guy means you're soft and weak, because toxic masculinity isn't seen as a problem. Also, having anything to do that's related to these "atrocities" means you're set for an even bigger social stigma. Being a teenager becomes harder than hard. Just a group of teenagers trying to find a place for themselves in midst of a backward society, realising that life can't be all black and white. Through the cruise of love; there tends to be desolations, heartbreaks, and painful detriments. But if there was true ardour; the beholder of the love would persevere in the face of the grudges, the heart scourging pains, and pertubs. They became acquaintanced, intimate friends, and finally deviate into inseparable lovers. Promises were made, altruism was clearly avowed, and a future was planned. Upon the series of heart spasm, the etching wounds, scourging pains, and the perforating heartbreaks that could crucify the hearts.
