Centuries ago in a world brimming with magic.... 
Dezarae is a headstrong, opinionated village girl accused of being a witch for one reason: She has a mind of her own and bows to no one- least of all the shifty village elder and his sleazy son.  
When it's discovered that she holds the company of a Shade, one of the most feared beings in her world, her village takes that as proof that she practices dark magic and finally attempts to burn her at the stake. 
Her life is temporarily saved, however, when the village elder's nephew and her own close friend Zacharian is found missing and the elder desperately sends her out to find him- promising that upon Zacharian's safe return she will be pardoned of her crimes as a witch- IF she banishes her Shade. 
Despite her distrust of the Elder, she agrees to locate Zacahrian and bring him safely home- leaving out that she will leave again once she has returned him. 
But when she finally does find Zacharian, she learns that he has no intention of returning to the village either- The Gods have called him out into the world for a greater purpose that will take him all across the known world and beyond to fight a rising evil, for they have named him... CHOSEN.
