Karmen Perez is a high school student in Grade 9. Her mother and father, Joshua and Isabel Perez, are very loving people. Isabel has cancer and cannot at all be fixed. This makes Karmen struggle a bit and of course the thought of her mother possibly dying soon is distressing. Sadly she had to prepare herself for the death of her mother being not far away but what she was not prepared for was the death of her close friend, Alec Marshall. The two were almost inseparable and you would think they could almost read each others minds. They had been in love with each other but would certainly never admit it.
Karmen was in complete denial and refused to admit or believe her best friend was dead. Depression and denial stay with Karmen for a long time until anger finally takes place but only for a short while. She bargains but knows it's useless and, last of all stages, she accepts her friend's tragic death.
