Along with it's new upcoming gaming console "The Nerve Gear" along with it's most anticipated game "Sword Art Online", which are both made by the genius scientist Akihiko Kayaba. But suddenly after the game was newly released the players were transported back to Aincard's capital "The Town of Beginnings". And then mysterious figure appeared in the sky and claimed that everyone whose currently in the are now trapped, and when they die in the game... they will also die in real life... and the ONLY way out of this death trap is to finish the game by reaching to floor 100th which is the final floor of the game.
