Dejó, a young university dropout sleeping rough and moving with a shady crowd, suddenly acquired a moral compass when he dramatically converted to Christianity. While Dejó was keen to live up to his new morals, his environment and his profound fear of poverty raised serious conflicts. The backdrop of A Jar of Clay, Part 1: Made in Nigeria was South Western Nigeria during the last quarter of the twentieth century, a period during which Nigeria as a nation experienced the heights of prosperity and the depths of poverty, as the price of a barrel of oil peaked and then bottomed out. The book explored the threats posed by our economic, social and cultural environment as well as our hopes, dreams and fears, to our lofty ethics and ideals.
