In order to compete for the throne Rye must be Betrothed, so he throws a competition to find a powerful match that would help him win the throne. At the competition Emerson focuses on assassinating the High Heir, for what she thinks is the greater good. However, a steep betrayal causes her failure. Rye finds out about the assassination and calls for her public execution, but before he can kill her, she reveals the one secret she has been hiding for seventeen years. Instead of killing her Rye uses this to his advantage and gives Emerson a choice. With her choice the two are tied together and are a battle that might cost them their lives.
