When a boy was twelve years old, he knew a lonely girl about the same age named Meira who was his neighbor. However, this work isn't about them. It's about their daughter, Lukka. This is her story.
Lukka was an orphan. Her mother committed suicide when Lukka was twelve due to an untreated case of 'Mad Hatter Syndrome'. After some time, her father realized he could not make it on his own so he left her at the steps of his neighbor's front door.
When she was thirteen, Lukka was working at a dance school as an assistant. At the time her biggest wish was to do what all the other kids she saw were doing. She was; However, much too soft spoken to ask to join the class or more accurately unable to speak at all. Lukka was born with a defect in her vocal cords, resulting in her being mute. She had no one to advise her, encourage her, love her, or help her. She had no time to think about learning sign language-she just wanted get enough money to support her adoptive mother, Miranda.
Every morning, Miranda woke Lukka up early to get the cows and sheep to the mountains for grazing. She had no lunch, and for dinner she was given a small piece of bread, a chunk of cheese and a cup of water or milk. She walked an hour to the town westward to go to work. She passed what little free time she has by simply dancing out in the woods. But when she turned fourteen, her adoptive mother died of a heart attack and she was sent into the foster system.
Now, she lives in Bloomington, Minnesota with her best friend LJ and goes to a high school about ten minutes away. She dances whenever she sees a chance and loves to read and write. But never has she, not once, spoken.
