Princess Maria of England vowed to never marry for anything but love, but destiny had other plans.

Orphaned at a young age, Maria was spitefully taken in by her uncle, George Louis, who despised her for her outspoken whit and beauty. But when the Act of Settlement in 1701 prohibited Catholics from inheriting the British throne, George was Queen Anne's closest living Protestant relative, and became King George I of Great Britain on August 1, 1714.

Maria's uncle wasted no time in getting her far away from the palace and his throne, arranging a marriage between her and Navy Admiral Arthur Rhodes, who has just returned from months at sea.
