Based on the book and not the movie so interpretation can be better explored.

Set after World War II, everyone who died during the time of the story is alive to save my hurting heart (Max's dad and others are still gone because they died before Liesel's story was being told).
Max is in his early 30s, Viktor is in his mid 20s, and Death is thankful that the war is over.

This is not based on any historical events. I don't know what the state was like in 1950s Germany so I took my best guess and adjusted the story accordingly (although some parts may look extremely out of place.)
