Saleem Beebeejaun hails from a family of very well-respected professionals who have been very influential in all the different spheres of the Mauritian society including societal, political and business matters. Saleem's maternal great grandfather G M D Atchia was the Lord Mayor of Port Louis and was a member of the Mauritius delegation that took part in the negotiations for the independence of Mauritius with the colonial power, Great Britain. These culminated in the independence of Mauritius in 1968. Saleem's father Dr Ahmed Rashid Beebeejaun is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University of Birmingham his alma mater. He has been a consultant Pediatrician in the Ministry of Health for the best part of twenty five years from 1970 and during his first five years was the sole pediatrician in service providing Care Island wide, during which time infant and childhood mortality dropped significantly He officially joined politics in 1995 and was an elected member of parliament till 2014 when he chose to retire from active politics. Dr Rashid occupied various ministerial posts and between 2005 and 2014 served as the Deputy Prime Minister. Dr Rashid Beebeejaun is the recipient of the highest distinction that Mauritius can confer namely the Grand Commander of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GCSK).All Rights Reserved
