The year 2031 brought the worst and best things to ever happen to humanity: zombies and magic

It's all connected to The Surge, a strange compound that was brought to earth via meteor. About one tenth of the population was instantly zombified, which led to society bunching together in cities for protection. Unlike most stereotypical zombie apocalypses, the world went back to normal, that is. until they found magic.

First seen in zombies, a tiny fraction of the population could use it, leading to an elite tier of society Meet Grayson, who tested positive for Surge particles in his blood. The government moves him to California and his journey begins as an introverted kid with the unique ability to grow bones out of his body.

guys please don't read this anymore lmao i write totally differently now💋 _________________ In a future where humans are genetically modified -- 'altered' -- at the age of sixteen, the world has been, until now, a safe place. Without changing a person's personality, undergoing the Alteration perfects their appearance, IQ, and even their immunity to diseases. No human passes the age of sixteen without being Altered. In the blink of an eye, things change. An ominous message is sent out to all of those below the age of sixteen, providing precise instructions that suggest they flee. Simultaneously, a deadly virus starts to spread all about the world, attacking only the Altered -- every human over the age of sixteen. The virus eats at the modified human brain, and soon the Unaltered begin to realise that the Altered are losing their minds. Home is no longer safe. Friends and family turn on one another, losing control of their own minds and bodies. The Unaltered aren't safe. Even if the virus isn't attacking them, the ones with the virus are. Set on a pristine, futuristic Earth, this is the apocalypse like you've never seen it before. (Rated mature for graphic depictions of violence and mild language.) The rain has turned crimson. With it, 3% of the world's population has inexplicably developed superpowers. Then the zombies arrive. Follow a brilliant chairman of a business empire and his supposedly dead wife as they journey through the apocalypse where many people have developed extraordinary abilities. Business tycoon Liam West never wanted for anything in his life, but when he laid eyes on Sienna Carmichael, he found one simple wish -- to take her home and make her his wife. Fate granted him his wish and joined them in matrimony. Four years later, his once-happy home lies in shambles after murder strikes his family, robbing him of his wife and their unborn child. Sienna "Angel" Carmichael wakes up from an accident that stripped her of her memories and finds herself living inside an elaborate lie. A man named Declan Howell claims to be her husband and the father of her unborn baby, but she can tell he secretly despises the baby she's carrying. But that isn't the worst of her troubles. Like many people across the planet since the rain turned crimson, Sienna developed a special ability. She can see auras around every living thing, leaking information about the world around her. She soon senses an impending calamity of catastrophic proportions and doesn't want to face it unprepared. With nothing but her instincts guiding her, Sienna begins to stock up on supplies, but nothing prepares her for what's to come. When the crimson rain returns and the undead roam the streets, Sienna crosses paths with an extraordinary man who might be the key to her past...and the ticket to her future.

*THE UNEDITED VERSION* Beware of typos, errors, and general mistakes. This is a very, very rough draft. "I live in a place called Compound 4. We are one of ten different compounds placed at strategic locations around the US. It's been thirteen years since the virus overtook humanity, turning about ninety percent of us into zombies. I'm not sure how it started exactly; that's classified information. I do know that in order to save what was left of the human race, the president at the time took a bunch of really smart people and kids and relocated them into new 'protected' cities. My father was one of those really smart people. I was only five at the time, but I knew what was happening." Within the walls of the compound, Jay makes stupid mistakes, mistakes even she doesn't understand, putting everyone inside at risk. All because she can't shoot someone. All because she misses the wind in her hair, the flowers on the hillsides, the sound of crickets at night. All because she's different, the only person untouchable by the Virus. When the mistakes begin to duplicate, and a girl shows up who knows her name, everything begins to change in Compound 4. Highest rank in Science Fiction: #9
