The guardians thought they'd gotten rid of Pitch Black, being swept into darkness by his own nightmares. Everyone was in high spirits and decided to throw a party to celebrate. No one bothered to check Pitch's lair to see what'd happened to him. If they had, they would see he'd only been severely weakened. Pitch Black was alone in his dark lair.
