The Confederation is gone, it was destroyed right along with its leader nearly two years ago. Dan is getting better, healing from traumas that don't seem to stay put when even Phil seems to have managed to keep the darkness at bay. There's towns now, new orders, hope for a new life where the two of them can raise the two boys whose fathers sacrificed everything to save them. Nothing will ever be the same, but it hasn't been for years now.

Everything is supposed to be better now.

But there are rumours, talk of fires starting and whole camps of people disappearing without explanation.
At the same time, sickness spreads and gangs threaten the peace of homesteads all around the country and with no one to turn to, the world's eyes once again turn to Dan and Phil. There's a new, unseen horror rising up and no one knows where the danger has come from. Monsters are rising, bonds are being tested and for the pair no one can be trusted but each other. But what exactly is trust, when living is trivial to love and family is no longer limited to blood?
