Estrella Swan is the adopted sister of Bella and her difference in appearance is an extreme reminder of that.
While Bella moved away from Arizona to reside in Forks, Washington, her sister stayed placed in the boarding school she's gone to for years. But when Bella pulled her second runaway stunt, Estrella decided the best option would be to move in with her sister and father and ignore the protests that her academically advanced mind belonged in the advanced school she loved so dearly. She just happened to love her sister that much more.
