Prologue - The blood trickled over my lips as it flowed from my nose. Its metallic tang flooded my taste buds. He loomed over me with his fists clenched. The stench of whiskey wafted off him. He was a mean drunk. His steel capped boot connected with my ribs before I even noticed he had moved. I clenched my teeth to keep from crying out as black spots began to dance before my eyes. He reached inside his coat and pulled out a handgun. I tried to get my mind to focus, to search for an escape, but the heavy fog invading my brain wouldn't allow it. I heard the crack of the gun going off and a scream that I assumed was tearing its way out of my own throat before I sunk into the darkness.

I pulled the hidden knife out from under my pillow and slashed as hard as I could at him, but he just grabbed my wrist and squeezed it until the pain made me drop the knife. Then he grabbed both my hands in one of his and held them over my head. He held me down while I struggled. I grunted and moved and tried to kick and scream, but I only wore myself out. Exhausted, I stopped thrashing and let the tears flow freely down my cheeks. I didn't know what to do, so I just tried to prepare myself for whatever was coming.Complete
