A person who is purported to have maladaptive daydreaming may have one or more symptoms of the disorder, but not necessarily all of them. Common symptoms include:

extremely vivid daydreams with their own characters, settings, plots, and other detailed, story-like features

daydreams triggered by real-life events

difficulty completing everyday tasks

difficulty sleeping at night

an overwhelming desire to continue daydreaming

performing repetitive movements while daydreaming

making facial expressions while daydreaming

whispering and talking while daydreaming

daydreaming for lengthy periods (many minutes to hours)

for me it's the daydreaming for lengthy periods, the overwhelming desire to continue daydreaming, and difficulty sleeping at night. my character in these daydreams in simply me but with a completely different look then I really do and this character is often thrown into the universes I'm a fan of such as shows, anime and video games. when she's not in those universes she's usually the hero of the reality I created. I guess these daydreams were and still are my way to keep myself from panicking so violently. these have been going since 6th grade it started during trips.
