Ayan is the Princess of Mereti, a wealthy African nation that has made contact with the Europeans, or the Nechis, in the 18th century. In effort to stop themselves from going to war with the Nechi nation of Arania, a country that had the initial goal of colonizing an unwilling Mereti, they sign several alliance treaties and marry their children to bind themselves by blood once the awaited heir is finally born. 

The only problem is that Ayan never consented to this marriage. Or to moving thousands of miles away from her homeland. And she certainly isn't consenting to bearing the heir of the arrogant Aranian prince--no matter how charming he is.
