During 1866, the country was at war with itself, both literally and figuratively. In the midst of the Civil War, during 1862, countless Native Americans were driven out of their homes, and the land stolen from them was given away with the Homestead Act. The settlers who came out to the West seeking to claim this land believed it was truly the government's to give away, and had no idea the land they were seeking to claim wasn't theirs to mark. Claire and Lillith are two best friends fleeing the racist South for the freedom of the West. One is the daughter of a rich man and sympathizes with the slaves, the other a former slave who grew up in captivity and hates whites such as Claire. Together, they seek to carve out new lives in the West and the land the government is giving away, with no idea from whom it had been stolen. Most settlers never found out about the land really being the Native Americans' as they fought to gain it. Will that be the fate of Claire and Lillith, as well?

What happens when you take the city girl and move her to the country? That's currently the situation that Elizabeth or Liz for short is facing. Her dad just died and her mom was seriously in a mid-life crisis which consisted of her mother thinking it would be a good idea to move back to her small hometown in the middle of hillbilly central to live in the house her grandma had left them in her will when she passed. Could Liz handle the new move, and leaving behind her glorious lifestyle and friends. The city was her home, how would she deal with fields and stars instead of tall buildings and lights. What would happen when the small towns champion bullrider took an interest in her, would she let all her walls she has spent her whole life building come down and let herself fall for him, or will she ignore him and do everything in her power to get back to her city of lights. Seriously this book is so much better than my lame description of it.
