When the old Malekeh, or queen, is assassinated, her sister, Seren, is shoved onto the throne. Seren, the ex-commander of armies, must now leave all that behind and rule her empire and make sure not to lead her people into a new war. And then there's the fact that, before the assassination, Seren's sister was supposed to have married a foreign prince. Faced with the choice between love and duty, Seren must decide if she will risk her nation for her heart and be alone forever.
