This is a inner monologue of Ash while sitting in the public library after meeting  with Blanca at the park but before Ash reads Eiji's letter. 
There will be a second part of this after reading Eiji's letter (he won't die I promise).
It's like a prequel to my other story Another missed flight. 
Sorry, I needed that to cope with chapter 24 and some people kept pestering me about publishing it so I had no choice ... I wrote that to understand Ash's reasoning.

Note that I had to pretend that Eiji told him some things directly and Ash just repeats what Eiji told him because Ash would never think or believe them about himself (like that he has a pure soul etc.)
Call that  relative freedom.

It has been many, many years since the death of Eiji Okumura. But after all this time, he is born back into the world for a second chance with something he can't quite remember, he doesn't even know what or who he's looking for, all Eiji can remember are bright emerald green eyes and the state of New York. Who is the boy with bright green eyes? He doesn't know, but he needs to find him, he needs to remember the past of a life he lived so long ago. So Eiji attempts to find the remains of the past that happened so long ago, including a blond boy with bright green eyes named Ash Lynx.

After Dino's death, Ash handed over all the documents and information he had on the Banana Fish drug, Dino's crime network and child prostitution ring and all the people on his payroll over to the police. In return he got immunity from prosecution which meant that after being the key witness in the trial that changed New York forever, all charges against him would be dropped and he would be free. Now, Ash was free which was what he had been fighting for for the last three years with only one goal in mind - to see Eiji again. But how would he contact him when Eiji had assumed he was dead? How would he explain it and apologize for all the pain he caused him? What if he moved on or hated him? Or worse, had forgotten about him? With Max's encouragement, Ash still tries to contact Eiji, hoping he gives him a second chance now that he is free... A new year is a good moment to start over, right? Will Eiji feel the same? With a happy ending, of course✨

Eiji is torn apart by the news of Ash's death. He locks himself away and begins to slowly fade away. When he finds out Ash is still alive he couldn't be happier. But now, after so long, after almost letting it all go every morning and night, how was he supposed to pick himself back up and just forget? He's been just as gone as Ash was. Everything is now over and everything will be back to normal. That should go for all who suffered the long time of war and pain, wins and losses, gains and loses. But Eiji is an exception. It's now time to return to his homeland, Japan. He feels a void in his heart as he boards the plane and he knows very well what can fill that void. It's that person he shared all his pains with. The only person he can't bear to lose, the only person he desires to see before he leaves. But he can't turn back now. He's made up his mind and he knows what he's doing is for the best. "Eiji." A voice rings in his ears. He knows that voice. He knows who called him and he listens to it. "I'm sorry Ibe-san but I'm going down." He doesn't want to leave and regret this for the rest of his life. He needs to see Ash right now. He needs to be with him. So he makes a decision and takes the risk. But, did he make the right choice? Or did he make a choice that will make him want to reset time and wish he never went off the plane?
