The premise of this fantasy story, who's setting in in an imaginary town in Tuscany, Italy, is like a riddle--the idea of an old recluse tasked with carrying out the mysterious, fantastical last wishes of his much more famous, enigmatic childhood friend is at the heart of the story. The story begin by simply setting up a hint that a greater conflict is lurking underneath the seemingly harmless request. It reads almost like a mystery novel which keeps the tension up and the pages turning.

Life, as they found out, had an awful habit of not staying true to their designs, however carefully they drew up the blueprints.
