Debido a que la cristiandad se propagó más lentamente en las zonas rurales, los paganos fueron los últimos en ser convertidos -y, a veces, de manera incompleta- de manera que su fe se convirtió en una mezcla de antiguas y nuevas religiones. Muchos santos locales son versiones cristianizadas de deidades paganas, adaptadas para ser integradas en el cristianismo.
