"So here's the game... at the end of each letter there will be a quote from a book, and in that book, you'll find the next letter, If you find all the letters then you find me." Agnes Henderson doesn't have much to live for. At school, she's bullied for her intelligence. Her home isn't much better, with a neglectful father and a stepmother that hates her guts. Looking for a way to escape it all, she writes a letter and places it in a book, hoping someone will find it and play her game. Sawyer Jackson is an addict. His mother, the one and truly good person in his life, was murdered by his stepfather, who now is serving his time in jail. Forced to live with his alcoholic uncle who doesn't bother to care for him, he tries to hide the pain with the high, until he finds a letter in a library book...

Michaela isn't the type to believe in fairytales, happy endings, or people. She's the kind of girl who rolls her eyes at cheesy rom-coms, keeps her circle small (by choice, of course), and would much rather spend her time with a book than deal with the drama of high school. But life, as always, has other plans. First, there are the letters. They show up out of nowhere, stuffed into her locker and bag, written by someone who knows way too much about her. They're ridiculous, cringe-worthy, and yet... strangely sweet. Then there's Bella, her boy-crazy best friend who's navigating a messy break-up, Sam, the world's most annoying housemate, and Lyra, whose life is full of secrets Michaela accidentally stumbles upon. Oh, and let's not forget Lee-the boy she swears she's over, even though her heart clearly disagrees. Michaela's sarcastic, guarded world is falling apart, and for the first time, she might have to let someone in.
