The journey tormented Virgil every night, thinking about what he lost. He stared down that balcony every day, hoping one day he would climb back up, holding onto his promise. He didn't trust Logic and Creativity. Mortality was the one who saw him climb up and helped him. Roman only then saw the true pain and suffering when he made a horrible assumption that snapped Virgil.
