The population in America has grown out of control. Every year, students in first through twelveth grade take the 10-241 exam to determine if they pass on to the next grade or killed. This infamous test got the nickname of 'The Thinning'. Many candidates try to stop this exam, and resolve the over population problem in other ways, but people are reminded of the 'sacrifice' students make every year. The failing 5% of the population are taken out of their classrooms, and the prosecutors commence The Thinning with permission from the governor of their state. This year, five students will fight against this inhumane practice. Of course this will not be easy, but they will do anything for their fallen friend.
Vylad was the oldest. His little sister, Luna, was only a year younger. Their friends, Lily, Hope, and Alex were juniors and seniors at Vista Point High School in Houston, Texas. Vylad and Luna were orphans, but still lived in their house they shared with their parents who passed away in an accident. Hope lived in an apartment with their parents and her little brother James. Alex lived with their mom. Lily was the daughter of one of the teachers at the high school.

Disclaimer: I wrote this novel before the movie Lucy came out it is in no way related but the premise of the brain and the powers eerily similar It is the year 2173. Human beings have evolved to use more than 10% of their brain, and as an effect, possess supernatural powers. Luna and Lara Valkyrie grew up in a foster home in the town of Westhaven, California. Both 18 and having been born on the same day, they were raised as twins, Luna adopting Lara's surname because of her own being unknown. Westhaven is a lovely town, the perfect place to live the american dream in. There is only one problem. Not only there, but in almost every place in the world, human beings are branded with a number, that being the amount of supernatural abilities they possess. By the time each child reaches the age of 18, that number becomes permanent, and everyone with a ranking above 5 is taken away. From that moment on, they belong to the government, and must train in government facilities that are a lot like prisons or army bases. Their eyes are changed by machines, and they are identified for the bright aura-like color that surrounds their pupils and contrasts against their natural eye color, "the sunflower effect". The day of the chosen has come, and Luna Valkyrie is a seven. When she is taken by government guards, she believes her life is over. They drove past a single tall scraggly tree on top of a hill shrouded in mist. The creepy tree was full of screaming crows. How could she hear them from inside the bus when she couldn't even seem to hear the voices of the kids around her? Geez, that was an awfully freaking dark image. She shivered and looked away. What did they call a group of crows again? Right, a murder of crows. Perfect. The weather was certainly the only thing that was typical these days, although you'd never know it by looking around the bus at most of the kids as they sat joking and gossiping with each other just like they had before... before that day everything had changed.
