Ekaterina er en 14-årig pige, som bor i Rusland. Hun er iblandt de 190.000 børn og unge, som har meldt sig ind i den russiske ungdomshær "junarmija" . Hun går til hverdag på en junarmija skole, hvor de får en grunduddannelse i våbenbrug og fædrelandskærlighed. En sommer tager hun afsted til junarmija sommerlejr, lidt ude for hovedstaden Moskva, hvor hun møder en masse unge som hende selv. Måske finder hun kærligheden, og måske opstår nyt had. Formålet ved lejren er i hvert fald at gøre dem klar til krig, men når gæveret bliver lagt på hylden, og læreren kigger væk, ser man, at dette blot er helt almindelige teenagere med hver deres historier og grunde.
