"You can't possibly mean the same Colton I'm thinking about, right?" Marie pressed on. I nodded and gave her a small smile. Her face said it all: I was way in over my head.
"Listen, Hailey, you have to understand one thing," She reached for my hand and held it in hers; her green as well. I was trying not to squirm under all the pressure. You know, her stare and grip has always made me feel like as if I'm in trouble. "He's bad news."
I pursed my lips together and shook my head, "You don't know him the way I do." I could feel the anger rise up in me. She doesn't know Colton. She doesn't know how he changed me along with himself. I slowly took my hand away from her grasp, but kept my eyes on hers. I have never stood up to her. Frankly, I don't know what had gotten into me. "Colton doesn't deserve this kind of judgement." I can see that my words had made their way into Marie's head. They were changing some gears.
"You don't deserve those stares or those letters that make their way into your mailbox either. Can't you see?" Her face turned soft and pleading, wanting me to agree. I could have agreed just to get her to stop her worrying but I didn't. "He's just going to break you."
"Then I'll take that chance."
