It started as a typical summer afternoon. Kaytlyn, Emily, Daniel, and Ruth got together for book club, to discuss The Underground Railroad, the Civil War, and slavery. Then a mysterious old lady invites them for a little field trip to see her secret room used in the Underground Railroad. The children can't resist, so they eagerly climb in... and then everything goes black. They each wake up in different places during the Civil War, and must find each other in order to return home. Meanwhile, they are each learning first-hand the horrors of slavery, war, and sickness. And as if that wasn't bad enough, they are each slowly loosing all their memories of the future... and of each other.

Where there's a will there's a way, and then there's Rem. A girl who lost it all after writing a book. Her writing style persuaded different groups to think and believe different things about her beliefs. The odd way her words touched the nation brought unity, which in turn made her the most revered woman in the United States. So much so that people sought her out to be the leader of the rebellion. Just shy of her twenty-first birthday, the once crazy college student leads a group of rebels through dangerous territory in an effort to escape to safer ground, only to face mountains of hardship in between. As the rebellion turns to full civil war, Rem tries her best to hold onto the last possession of her past life that she has, while juggling the relationships she builds on her journey. War changes every participant, and that's no exception for the Rebel princess.
