The Chronicles of Albaa: Part I

Anya and her family had fled the Floating City many years passed, when her father, once an exalted Master Merchant had lost everything to the Great Storm. They had been left with nothing but their lives and had gone north, to the wild lands beyond the protection of the Order and the fae-hunters. There they had lived in peace until her father received word that perhaps their wealth had returned.

Anya would stop at nothing to free her father. She would not see him enslaved to the hideous beast who would see them all dead, or as playthings to his fae-cursed subjects. She would venture to the icy lands of his kingdom; and she would see the beast's silver blood run down he edge of her blade.

But nothing is quite what she expected when she finds the Fae Court - or more aptly when it finds her.

I shuddered. It had never been so dark, nor so quiet before. There was always the light of the moon to guide me. The sound of the wind against the trees. I shook the thought from my mind and continued further into the wood. Then I saw it. A white light spread across the ground in front of me. The clouds had parted from where they were, revealing the moon at its fullest. I stared in awe. It had never been so bright. The ambiance began to come back. The wind began to dance with the trees. I closed my eyes. The scent of oak filled my nose and exhaled through my mouth. The aroma filled me with exhilaration. It filled me with something I couldn't explain. I felt something I hadn't felt in a long time. Although it was something I wasn't used to feeling, I craved it deeply. I felt happy. I felt as if nothing else mattered than this moment. I opened my eyes. Everything seemed clearer. I could see the particles of dust flying in the beam of light that shone around me. I wanted to stay here for longer. I wanted this moment to last forever. Until I saw the wolf. It was hidden among the fold of trees behind me. It stared at me in aggravation. It's brows furrowed in my direction. It's face, livid with anger, revealed a set of unpleasant and sharp teeth. It began to move slightly forward. The wolf bounded towards me. It happened so quickly I had no time to react. It's limbs outstretched. It's teeth bared. My body, paralyzed from fear, refused to move. My lip quivered, urged to call for help, but no help would come. I was too deep into the woods. No one would hear my screams. The thought was soon interrupted by the wolf's teeth digging into my side.

They say if you have a little faerie blood, you've been Touched. Some might have a Touch of water, a Touch of healing, or a Touch of animal speaking. Aoife, whose grandmother was a full-blooded fae and whose sisters were blessed with perfectly useful and harmless Touches, involuntarily drains the life from anything and anyone that veers too close to her. After a chance meeting gone incredibly wrong, Aoife accepts a bargain that may be her last hope: If she helps the Grand Enchanter with his experiments, he will teach her to control her magic. She isn't quite willing to bet everything on the mysterious man who never shows his face, but it's the only option she has left. In this Beauty and the Beast inspired tale, follow Aoife's journey as she learns that even the worst of curses are sometimes unknown blessings in disguise.
