There has been a critical shift; the balance of magic has been upset, leaving the world's Iridomorphs in danger. Two women, raised from childhood within the Citadel, more than a decade apart, must navigate this perilous new world and protect their comrades. Each will attempt to reset the balance - but they may not have the same goal.

Jhae is an Iridomorph and currently a Novice studying in the capital. When her training is complete she will become a Branded Quell, a milestone she has been looking forward to that is now only months away. But she inadvertently uncovers a secret, a conspiracy that those involved would kill to keep hidden. Now she must leave the only home she's known to seek help and answers from the barbarian north.

Meanwhile, the human-clothed creature among them resists the hunger to ravage his companions. "Walking into the small cave now was almost bland, the power too familiar to notice. The fact that the den seemed to lighten instead of darken as it should was encouraging instead of ominous. Thalana followed the path, each step taken with the confidence of a master who had performed the same task thousands of times. As she exited the other side she found herself among a field that, by all logical reasoning, should not have been there. Thalana knew there was some deep magic at play, that she wasn't home anymore, that she was somewhere else, but she had ceased caring long ago. The herbs she collected were useful, and so she ignored the magic burning at the back of her neck. Except this time wasn't the same as before. This time, someone was waiting for her." When Thalana discovers a threat to her people, she travels to the capitol city of Oni Nalore to warn her High Chieftan. When the Chieftan dismisses her fears, however, she realizes she cannot rely on the hierarchy and takes the burden of the defense of her people upon herself, embarking on a journey to unite the clans and gain the insight necessary to defeat this danger.
