Born as a child of rape, Esperanza Morales has always been different from everyone else, without a father (well, one in prison), and with a mother who resents her existance. After being tormented both mentally and physically at school and neglected at home, Esperanza decides to run away, trying to start a new life. And, over a year after leaving, she finds herself on the side of the highway after her forty-something boyfriend gets caught in the act of cheating, he dumps her and she's on her own again.
