They meet at White Rose special school and bond over their mutual lack of desire to live.
One night in June's backyard they decide to commit a double suicide but July wants it to be after she's had at least one decent birthday. This gives them four months to at least do four things they both want to do.

They intend to do all of this together and only together. However, when an incident puts July in a comatose state everything goes upside down and July finds her life in a halt.
It was a promise so no matter what, she cannot let herself get better, not without July.
