Sydney didn't have much, but that was fine with her. She didn't need much. Growing up on the Washington coast in a lonely beach town, working quietly behind the scenes was what she was good at. Living on the beach was much less glamorous than most people imagine. Her home was a beat up old Winnebago that she had shared with her father until he passed. Her father had been a detached parent. He loved his daughter of course, but he was by no means an affectionate man. She had grown up fending for herself, working backstage at a bar that hosted live bands using a fake ID. After the death of her father she saw an ad for a guitar technician for a local Seattle band. A love of rock and roll had been the one thing that her and her dad had in common. Selling everything that she didn't need she packed up her pickup truck and travelled north to the city, leaving the sleepy town in her rear view mirror. She didn't expect to embark on what would become the adventure of a lifetime. For someone who had hardly left the town she grew up in, the opportunity to get paid to travel the country and listen to great music was a dream come true. The band became her family, and life on the road was a perfect fit for her. Chris Cornell instantly became Sydney's best friend in the whole world. They were in love, that was plain as day to anyone who paid attention. Yet, sometimes love isn't as simple as it should be. Sometimes, love hurts. Warning: This book covers potentially triggering subjects such as depression, suicidal ideation, domestic abuse, sexual assault, poverty and drug use. These are issues that many of us have faced and are very real. If you or a loved one is experiencing suicidal thoughts or abuse in a relationship, please reach out and find help. After losing her job and her girlfriend, it's time for Annie Abraham to admit defeat and move back in with her parents. She has hardly been back to her tiny Montana hometown since the unforgettable summer before her senior year of college, when she agreed to babysit for Laurel Jacobs. Annie didn't expect to fall in love back then, and she never thought that after all this time she'd still be in love with the woman she walked away from when she was twenty-one. Laurel Jacobs has never gotten over Annie Abraham. It's been almost a decade since their fling and she can't move on. She has her kids to think about - at least, she tells herself that's why she hasn't been on a single date since Annie left. Her life was different back then: when they met, she was in the middle of a divorce with two young kids and no idea how the future looked. Now she owns a bookstore, her kids are growing up, and she's too busy for romance. Annie thought she would have more time to settle back into life in Deer Pines before being confronted by the love of her life, but she's not that lucky. After all this time, she's back for good and Laurel is the first person she sees, when she has just spent seventeen hours on a train and she's desperately in need of caffeine. It's the first time they've seen each other in eight years and it isn't long before all those old feelings come rushing back to the surface. They weren't buried as deep as they thought they were. A lot has changed since they last saw each other, more than either of them realize, but life hands out second chances for a reason. The first time they fell in love, the timing was wrong. Now's their chance to make it right. © Elle Carrigan 2023
