Luck has always been something of a strong suit for Benjamin Cooper. Little things, mostly; finding a lost item just in time for its rare, intended use, just barely skirting around a summer monsoon, dodging a musket ball by a hair's breadth, or having the exact amount of forgotten coinage in his pockets to pay a tax collector: standard, in Ben's experience. Today, though, things are going badly. Very, badly. - Reginald Birchwood is the son of a man who is the Cardinal of a religious order of healers, in public, and a very accomplished order of supernatural predators, in the dark. He does not believe in luck, and does not feel he needs it, not in *any* conceivable situation. Until he meets Ben Cooper, an ordinary 'Salt', and *extra*ordinary *idiot*, bumbling about blindly in the dark with a Demon on his shoulder and no fear of what Reginald knows for certain lurks in the shadows, and yet he is *somehow* still alive, and *happy* about it!
