Merrick Troy is the popular, handsome and annoying bully who is making Laine’s life hell. It’s just too bad she can’t keep her hands off of him.

Laine is surprised to suddenly discover she can take away others' emotional pain simply by touching them. She soon becomes very annoyed by her gift when she senses that the school's top jerk, Merrick, is almost always in considerable amounts of pain. Classes with him become intolerable and her grades begin to slip.

Now, despite her own agenda to get a certain date to the Spring Formal dance, she has to make time to help a guy she doesn’t even like. She must invent or find ways to touch Merrick Troy every day, which leads to feelings changes and grizzly secrets about the town, and their past, being revealed.
