Mijn adem stokte in mijn keel toen hij mijn richting uitkwam. Er werd gefloten langs alle kanten. Ik wierp snel een blik over mijn schouder om te checken of zijn vriendin niet achter me stond ofzo. Alleen Johanna stond achter me, dus zette ik verward een stap opzij zodat hij haar makkelijker zou kunnen bereiken.
Maar hij stopte voor mijn neus. Ik slikte en keek omhoog. Daar stond hij, de meest gevreesde en meest populaire jongen op heel Willson High. Nog nooit in mijn leven was ik zo bang geweest. Ik wroette snel door mijn gedachten: Heb ik iets verkeerds gedaan? Had ik misschien onbewust zijn territorium betreden? Heb ik hem met een verkeerde blik aangeken?
Ik ging op mijn tippen staan zodat ik me niet zo klein voelde. De angst was waarschijnlijk duidelijk in mijn ogen af te lezen, maar in plaats van me gerust te stellen, liet hij me weer eens voor paal staan, zoals bij mij wel vaker het geval was.
" Dat gestaar van je maakt me echt bang, heb ik iets van je aan ofzo?" Hij lachte een rij parelwitte tanden bloot die fel afstaken tegen zijn zongebruinde huid. Mijn gedachten werden ruw onderbroken toen hij me bij mijn schouders vastnam en me zachtjes naar achteren duwde.
"Ik weet dat je me niet goed kent, en daar moet ik snel verandering in brengen. Kom straks na school naar het baseballveld." Het was geen aanbod. Het was een bevel. Met die woorden draaide hij zich om en vertrok zo plotseling als hij verschenen was. Ik ademde diep in. Alle alarmbellen in mijn hoofd gingen af. WHAT JUST HAPPENED????
