My ancestors were beautiful African Kings and Queens, why can't I be one too? I, too, sing America. I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen When company comes, But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong. Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table When company comes. Nobody’ll dare Say to me, “Eat in the kitchen,” Then. Besides, They’ll see how beautiful I am And be ashamed— I, too, am America. -Langston Hughes

Melanin

My name is Melanin Audrey Hayes, but the people closest to me call me Chocolate. Im 15 years old and extremely focused on my education and my dance. I plan to go to Spelman when I'm older and I won't let anything get in the way of it. I live with my parents and my two older brothers Isaiah and Josiah. They make sure that I want for nothing and that I get treated how they feel i should. I don't live in a mansion, but i don't live in a bad neighborhood either, We're an average middle-classed family. At this point boys are not really on my mind, I have more important things to worry about. I'm obviously dark and i love it, I never have, or will be ashamed of who i am. It's just me... Its Melanin.
