Princess Celestia has banished many pony species so she can create her own perfect world. Luna was banished to the moon after trying to create an uprising, and forgot most of her life when she came back. 

Once she remembers, she travels to the nightmare dimension in hopes of saving the ponies. What she doesn't expect is a princess that calls herself Luna's daughter and a society so sensitive to sunlight that they're practically albino.
