Dva roky po skaze, ktorá prišla na svet v podobe netvorov - zmutovaných ľudí besniacich po čerstvom mäse, žije dvadsaťjedenročná Cynthia v pivnici pod troskami domu spolu so skupinou preživších. Lenže každým dňom sa čoraz viac ochladzuje a ona si uvedomuje, že sa musia premiestniť, aby prežili. V meste, do ktorého išli hľadať útočisko, sa však všetko skomplikuje a proti jej vôli ju odvezú do Urdisu - budovy, v ktorej by mala byť v bezpečí. Ibaže Cynthii sa postupne podarí preniknúť pod pozlátku tohto naoko bezpečného útočiska a to, čo tam nájde, sa jej ani vonkoncom nepáči. Čoskoro zistí, že sa neoplatí byť nepriateľom Urdisu...

Obviously, when a flesh-eating parasitical virus was found, scientists in all their glory decided to study it, which led to the greatest calamity in human history. Warning: This is the original book 1, it is now considered more of a prelude/building character relationships arc than a book. This provides backstory and sets the foundation for the characters and their relationships.
