Even though she's been going to this school for nearly two years now, Penny is the social underdog of Lindale Highschool. No one knows her
name - even the teachers have to ask when they call on her in class. It doesn't bother her much though; it's not like she's ever made a name for herself. And besides, she likes it that way. She doesn't raise her hand in class, doesn't converse with her peers, but she also doesn't start trouble - and she never tries. However, her school life is still the highlight of her day compared to what she knows is waiting for her back at home. . .

Kate's still struggling with the fact that her parents have officially split up. She's known for months that it was coming, and yet, it never really seemed real. Like some nightmare that she would wake up from any second now. Any second. But she never did. And that's when she knew: she wasn't getting out of this. She was moving to Hideaway, Texas, away from her friends and half of her family, and she was going to start over with the broken girl in her geometry class.
