“There will always be those who say no Lissie. There will always be those who do not believe what they are told. There will always be those who rebel.” Lissie Turner is 13. She lives in hut number 433, in Province 5 of what was once England.. Life is peaceful and people are fortunate. There are no wars, there is enough food for everyone and everyone has a job. There is no reason to complain or to worry. Everything is taken care of. But one day Lissie Turner finds an apple tree. She knows it should not be there. Growing food is forbidden. Only the government is allowed to grow food, and all plants, trees and meat are raised under the Domes. The government seized control of nature after the last war ended seventy years ago. Since then, life has been peaceful for the surviving people on earth. Everything is provided for. As long as you keep to the rules. But with the discovery of the apple tree, Lissie finds herself breaking the rules.

Animals long ago respected one another. Were equal and fair to one another. Even humans, when they were like us. Creatures hunted and built shelter for survival, and nothing else. Many generations past, and humans have evolved with greed. They now refer to themselves as superior, and break the ancient rules. Only kill to survive. Young Snow's pack has become one of the many targets, whereas members were killed every once and a while. Now, Snow's pack was forced to be always on the move, to avoid such an atrocity. Finding enough food during winter was a miracle, but finding a safe home would be a dream.
