"Long ago, there were people who were gifted with special abilities, such as the control over fire, air, earth, and water. No person got the same ability as another.
These people had to split their souls with another living being to live, due to their ability being so powerful. The other being that contained the person's soul was called a spirit animal, or bond animal. At the age of thirteen you would get your spirit animal. After meeting your spirit animal, a marking of the animal would appear somewhere on their body.
Though, the humans soon grew jealous of their power and declared war on them. Sadly the humans won, and those who were gifted with abilities were killed off.
Some say that there are people with abilities living far away, in a land unknown to human kind, though none have seen these people and made it back alive."
I was walking by a small park when I heard a woman telling the story of the Gifted to three young children. I used to believe those stories were just small tales to tell to children at night, but I had been proven wrong my Sophomore year of high school. I was walking to meet up with a friend of mine when I had first met my bond animal. It was pretty terrifying when I got the mark, but I got over it.
