We ran through the dense foliage, flinging vines out our way as we ran faster and faster, yearning for the freedom we had experienced but once before. I started wheezing as the thin air began to weigh on my lungs. Each of my muscles screamed in protest at the force I was using, but it didn’t matter; I couldn’t care as long as we made it to the checkpoint. We had been trapped for far too long, but no longer. Faster, harder, farther. My eyes widened as the clearing came into view. Soon… I thought with a huff. I flung my body through the last line of thorny plants, knowing that I was being cut on each exposed limb, but not feeling any of it, into the awaiting sunlight.
Soon we would be free.
