This next poem is gruff, written in briefly worded couplets that rhyme, each beginning with a heavily accented syllable to add to the feel of the harsh subject matter. It is about abuse -- abuse of a child. It is a difficult topic to read about, especially when I am telling you that what you will be reading is true as it was told to me by the person who experienced it.

For as long as Evelyn could remember, her home has never been a safe place. With the constant threat of her mother's erratic behaviour, Evelyn is nothing more than her punching bag. But one day, she finds an abandoned poem left on a park bench, and with it comes Darren. Darren is everything Evelyn is not- unadulterated, raw and so unapologetically himself. As he draws Evelyn into a world she has never know before, the ties between them begin to tighten.
