vampires and werewolves hate each other, this is a fact almost everyone knows
though the government of unnatural doesn't want this. werewolves were mostly stronger in packs and if one vampire dared to attack one werewolf, their pack will hit back harder. it'd mean war under the unnaturals would break loose and that's something everyone wanted to prevent.
this is why they created a school or well, schools to let kids to teenagers get use to hang around each other. to show it's important to respect other species.
Derrick Bloodheart was one of those people. as a born vampire he had to go to those school from young of on. he didn't really hate werewolves or anything but he wasn't fan of them either.
in college he started to notice a mysterious boy who catches his interest. for some reason he couldn't find out of if this handsome green eyed male was a vampire or werewolf which he always could tell from people, this only made him more curious.
