High schooler Millie Thornburgh never complained much about her life. She had a kind old aunt, good grades, and a best friend whom she was attached at the hip with. But when the school holds a charity fair, and she discovers an old book, her life takes an alarming turn to the weirder.

The (cute) older, popular brother of her best friend claims it belonged to his dead mother's. This is followed by physical attacks, emotional conflicts, and the disappearance of a loved one. Now pushed into the mystery of a possible murder, Millie has only one man's name as a lead as she journeys to find her missing Aunt Terri, find out more from the dead woman's book, and why a mysterious cloaked man wants it so bad. She has to hurry before her missing Aunt ends up sharing the same fate as the owner of the book.

She went over to the tree, which was a large, aged maple, and bent down. She stuck out her hand, feeling in the darkness, and her heart leapt for joy when her fingers brushed up against cracked leather.

She took hold of the book, and standing up again, gave a breath of relief.

That breath of relief was broken, however, when there came the sound of another breath.

A breath that wasn't hers.
