They first started out in the late 2000's as a project by YAMAHA to test out these holographic singers and see if the Japanese masses enjoyed them.
It turns out the folks in Japan didn't like them, they loved them. They loved them so much that they are willing to snuggle with life size body pillows of these volcaloids and do even go far as to marry them. Soon Vocaloids spread like a wildfire and soon began a massive success in other countries like America, which happens to be my country.

By the times it reached the mid to end 2020's Vocaloids were enhanced with all fives senses in order to feel more alive with audience like actual singers. They weren't Holograms anymore they were full on Androids, and no they didn't take over the world like Skynet they actually cared about us humans, all they cared about was us being love and we loving them.
