Ambrosia Rhett is just a normal, helpless girl. As a human raised by witches, she struggles to harness the magic that flows through the air of her hometown. Unable to attend the local magic academy, she spends her days working as a domestic servant to a wealthy family. All Ambrosia wants to do is escape the witching town of Cresthaven and make her way to the Outbranch, the forbidden land that humans call home.

In order to maintain a tenuous peace agreement, no humans are allowed into Cresthaven, and no witches are allowed into the Outbranch.

Cresthaven has no birthright citizenship. The children of human immigrants are known as thornbloods, and they are treated like virtual slaves.

When she meets up with a group of fellow thornbloods, they form a plan to escape to the Outbranch. Together.

Without magic, following through with their escape plan will be difficult. However, as they form their route to freedom, the group realizes that running away will not stop the true enemy.
